Spiritual Anarchy

1. Simple message

This song is about discovering the simplicity of being. It describes a simple recognition that at any moment we can internally recognize the mystery of life in ourselves and in others.

2. Don’t let the music die

Everyone has something to give and it comes from our own unique experiences and self- expression. So don’t hold back or make yourself small, be who you are and say what you want.

3. Spiritual Anarchy

To find out what is true, through the observation of our own direct experience and movements of the psychological mind, it is possible to go beyond our ideologies, religious, social and political dogma and find true freedom.

4. It hurts but it heals

Transformation and change can be a painful but by embracing and fully feeling what we fear the most we can be liberated from suffering.

5. Butterfly

The butterfly is the symbol of transformation and change. It is a metaphor for human beauty and potential and that it is important to recognize that we all have the capacity to transform and grow.

6. I see

Through the recognition of our natural state, through clear seeing and being, we see our own beauty and the beauty in everything. This brings an inner strength to face all of life's challenges with heart, acceptance, and gratitude.

7. Talisman

A Talisman is an object that brings good luck and fortune. This song expresses the view that we do not need a talisman or anything outside ourselves to be truly at peace and happy if we can discover who we truly are in our hearts.

8. Saorise

Saorise is the Irish word for freedom and mo chroí is the Irish word for my heart. The song describes the human qualities of humility, honesty, and gratitude in the quest for true freedom.

9. Whom are you?

Is inspired by the question “who am I”, the basic tenant of Ramana Maharishi’s method of self- inquiry. When we ask ourselves the question “who am I”, through awareness, the power of our psychological mind is lost and our true nature is revealed.

10. Mother Father

The song is a cover version of a rainbow song. It represents the unity of everything in this world and that everything is a mirror to see ourselves more clearly realizing that we are all connected and one.

AWARENESS

1. The Bigger Picture

The Bigger Picture was written in 2010 after a shamanic ritual in which I experienced complete connectedness to myself, others and the natural world. This ignited a deep longing for self-discovery and challenged many deeply held belief systems that I had previously believed to be a reality. The song is, therefore, an invitation to question whom you think you are and discover who you really are.

2. Stillness

Stillness describes the experience of profound inner stillness which can be linked with the breath and an opening of the heart. Through conscious breathing, there is a gateway to finding peace within ourselves.

3. Spirit

The song Spirit is a reflection on how our true nature or spirit can be suppressed by limiting belief systems, and the feeling of disconnection from ourselves and others in modern society. The chorus, which was taken from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, states “see yourself in others, what harm could you do, then whom could you hurt”.

4. What’s For You Won’t Pass You

In 2011 I made my way across Australia before reaching South America to conduct research for a future MA in Ethnomusicology on shamanism, music & healing. The song title was inspired by a phrase often spoken by my grandfather representing the trust needed to follow your intuition and acceptance towards everything you experience in life.

5. Warrior Soul

Warrior Soul describes the fighting spirit that is sometimes needed to overcome challenging experiences. The song represents a fighting spirit of willingness and sincerity to shine a light on the darker parts of the human psyche, which are sometimes difficult to acknowledge and bring into conscious awareness.

6. Staring At The Moon

After returning from South America in 2012 I began my MA in Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths University London. This was a period of self-reflection and uncertainty as I sought to understand and integrate what I had experienced in South America. The song represents a daydreaming state in which I experience moments of clarity regarding important lessons that I had learned in relation to the importance of family, friends, and self-responsibility.

7. Altai Magtaal

During my MA in Ethnomusicology, I had the opportunity to learn Khoomii singing (Mongolian throat singing). The song is traditionally a praise song to the Altai Mountains in Mongolia. The version that I have recorded was arranged by my teacher Michael Ormiston. Michael learned Mongolian throat singing in Mongolia through traditional means and developed his own method of teaching the technique to western students.

8. Buyant Gol

Buyant Gol is a traditional Mongolian melody named after the Buyant River in Mongolia. Khoomii singing is believed to have developed as an imitation of nature with the high overtone representing the wind whistling between the mountains and the drone representing the continuous flow of the rivers and streams. The added verse is related to the healing power of being present, nature and music.

9. Communicate

In 2014 I began my training as a music therapist at the University of Limerick. As a part of an assignment, I was required to select songs that could potentially be used when working with future clients groups in areas such as Autism, Alzheimer’s or mental health. When searching for material, I adapted the lyrics of a poem used to create better eye contact with children with autism. The song developed into Communicate, a song that represents how music & music therapy creates connection.

10. Typical Jah

Typical Jah is a light-hearted view on the effects of karma and the roller-coaster of life. Even through difficult times, it is possible to have a smile on your face.

11. The Stronger The Tree The Deeper The Roots

In 2012 I experienced a “wake-up” call in relation to my personal health. This resulted in many positive lifestyle changes as I began to experiment with meditation, yoga, and qigong. The title of this song was inspired by my qigong teacher Nadine Buttery who used the visualization of a tree as a means of grounding one’s energy into the feet, staying rooted to the ground and present in the body throughout the practice.

12. Yarrow

This song resulted from a studio jam while making the album and incorporates the many different musical and cultural styles that I have encountered over the years. Using the Tibetan bowl, shicapa (leaves), didgeridoo, djembe, and shamanic chant, the song has an intensity which reflects my experiences of the shamanic world and influences from heavy rock and aboriginal culture.

13. I Know Me Now

The final song represents a personal experience of music as therapy as the melody and lyrics came directly after a heart-opening experience during my qigong practice. Each time I sing or listen to this song it connects me to that moment. It represents for me the power of music to affect our emotional state and to facilitate healing and positive transformation.

BIO

Hons. BA Applied Music, MA Ethnomusicology, MA Music Therapy

Niall Mc Guigan is a musician and practicing music therapist from Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan, Ireland. Specializing in medical ethnomusicology, he has researched the topic of music & healing within shamanic & neo-shamanic traditions and also the development of therapeutic presence as a music therapist. Niall is currently working in the Netherlands as a music therapist in the area of forensic music therapy & Dementia & Alzheimers care.

He has recently published an research article on the development of therapuetic presence in the peer-reviewed online journal Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy https://voices.no/index.php/voices/article/view/2586

As a musician he has performed in a variety of bands ranging from metal, grunge, rock, traditional Irish music, funk & reggae and also at festivals such as Electric Picnic, Arcadian fields (Ireland), Glastonbury (UK), Earth Garden & The Bubble Festival (Malta), Sacred Feminine Healing Festival (Czech Republic), & Psy-fi Festival (Netherlands).

The debut album “Awareness” is a collection of songs written over a period of six years expressing experiences of travel, education and self-discovery. Similar to the idea of songlines, a term used in aboriginal culture to describe songs that create a map, each song has a distinct story, life lesson or meditation that guides attention within, towards self-discovery and connection.

The album incorporates many musical styles including reggae, folk, rock, and Khoomii (Mongolian throat singing). This is fused with a variety of cross-cultural influences ranging from South American shamanism to eastern meditation practices.

Niall has released his third album "Spiritual Anarchy". The album is a reflection of the "spiritual journey" or the unlearning of what we believe to be true. Its theme relates to the resulting breakdown of psychological belief systems, ideologies, and social and cultural conditioning through self-inquiry from a desire for authenticity and connection.

The musical style is a return to Niall's rock roots, in keeping with the eclectic world music feel of his last album fusing Mongolian throat singing, reggae, folk, and alternative rock.

Music is an incredible tool which helps us to access a deeper connection with our heart, emotions & feelings. Through feeling we remember our human connection and can deepen our sense of "being". Through this connection, self-inquiry can begin to uncover our true nature, the heart of reality and an ever-present stillness within.
